Boston Dynamics Spot vs. ANYmal: Which Quadruped for Industrial Inspection?

April 20, 20268 min readIPSANOVA

Both are class-leading platforms. But they make different trade-offs on payload, software ecosystem, support, and price. Here's how to choose for your use case.

Quadruped robots have moved from research labs to active industrial deployments. Spot from Boston Dynamics and ANYmal from ANYbotics are the two platforms most commonly evaluated for inspection use cases. They're both excellent — but they're not interchangeable.

Boston Dynamics Spot

Spot is the more recognizable of the two, benefiting from Boston Dynamics' years of viral marketing. In practice, it's a mature, well-supported platform with a large ecosystem of third-party payloads and integrations.

Strengths: Wide payload ecosystem, strong software SDK, excellent community support, proven in oil & gas and utilities deployments.

Watch out for: Higher upfront cost, payload capacity is limited compared to ANYmal C, and the software stack requires investment to customize.

ANYbotics ANYmal

ANYmal C is purpose-built for industrial inspection. It carries a heavier payload, has an IP67 rating for harsh environments, and is designed to operate in ATEX/hazardous zones.

Strengths: Higher payload, certified for hazardous environments, purpose-built inspection software (ANYmal Inspector), strong European support.

Watch out for: Smaller ecosystem than Spot, less brand recognition (sometimes a procurement barrier), higher learning curve on the software side.

How to choose

If you're in oil & gas, mining, or any environment with explosion risk: ANYmal's ATEX certification is often a requirement, not a preference.

If you're in utilities, construction monitoring, or security patrol: Spot's ecosystem and ease of integration often make it the faster path to deployment.

Both require a proper assessment of your environment, payload needs, and integration requirements before committing. IpsaNova can help you structure that evaluation.
